A night of Wine and Dine at Nono's x Happy Living

A night of Wine and Dine at Nono's x Happy Living

Chef Baba Ibazeta Benedicto was first recognized with her delightful cakes and sweet desserts through her first venture, Classic Confections. It was the go-to supplier for coffee shops and restaurants with her infamous Nono's (her father's name) Chocolate Oblivion, placed her on the map. It then catapulted her to start in another venture named Nono's by Classic Confections, a restaurant that serves timeless comfort food brought to the next level using the best ingredients and recipes. It's first branch is in UP Town Center then they opened two more branches in The Podium and Three Central, Makati.

On October 9, 2018, Nono's held a Wine and Dine evening to introduce their wine pairing dishes. They also invited Julian Gagliardi, General Manager of Happy Living their wine distributor for their restaurants to share his knowledge when it comes to wine and ideal food to pair with it. He also discussed the how wine was made, various styles of wine and also history of some wine makers around the world.

He taught us the 5 "S" of wine tasting.

  • See
  • Swirl
  • Smell
  • Sip
  • Savor

Also one of the info he provided us stuck with me. The price point of wines can determine the quality of process will affect the price and longevity of wine bottle when stored. Less than Php500 needs to be consumed right away within 2-5 years and for bottles priced Php600 and above can be kept for 10 to 20 years.

Knowing the things he shared that evening, I will certainly know what to look for before purchasing a bottle of wine. Probably recommended food along with it.

Out of their seven heavenly dishes, we got to try five of it. Our server Yang, after serving each dish pour us a glass of wine that suits that dish. May it be red or white wine from their selections.

White Wine: Chardonnay 2016, Beringer
Bordeaux Blanc 2017, Chateau Gantonnet

Penne with Stracciatella (Php 375)
Penne with buttery and creamy stracciatella cheese, tomato-herb sauce and cherry tomatoes, sprinkled with parmesan.
Well-balanced tomato sauce, I"m really not a fan of sweet sauced pasta. But this one hits the spot. Right tanginess topped with cheesy goodness. I could eat this dish everyday. The white wine cleanses the palate for the next bite.

Sole and Chips (Php 475)
Fried beer-battered sole and Nono's fries, served with tarragon dip and sour cream
Nono's fries was crispy and perfectly salted. We all liked it plus the beer-battered fish was highlighted better thanks to white wine. It wasn't too oily too.

Burrata Cheese Platter (Php 455)
Grilled sourdough, fresh tomatoes, basil, walnuts with a ball of burrata
Deconstructed mala-tapas dish. It was so light and not too filling. The combination of flavors didn't overpower each other. I find this refreshingly simple.

Red Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Beringer
Bordeaux Rouge 2013, Chateau Gantonnet

Pizza Pull Apart (Php 355)
Freshly baked panini with chorizo, tomato-herb sauce and melted mozzarella
Freshly baked and easily pulls apart. Even though it was a bit cold cause we all took photos before eating it was still soft to the touch.

Beef Burgundy (Php 455)
Slow-braised beef stew with red wine sauce, potatoes, garbanzos, chickpeas and carrots with a side of garlic rice
Love, love how thick and heavily spiced this stew was and the tender beef. I enjoyed this dish a lot cause I'm fond of savory sauce that is packed with flavor, this one won my heart and tummy.

I've visited all their branches; an afternoon meal with my friend at UP Town Center then at their Podium branch for my birthday salubong. Knowing they'll have wine in their menu I will certainly come back for some tita nights. Highly recommend their Beef Burgundy, Penne with Stracciatella and Burrata Cheese Platter.

The ambiance for all branches were welcoming and will give you a sense of homey atmosphere. But for me their, UP Town Center location still tops the most Instagrammable place and second is their Three Central venue.
