Paper Moon's Emi Wada in Manila

Paper Moon's Emi Wada in Manila

Mille Crepe meaning "a thousand crepes" or more popularly known as "crepe cake" is an exquisite creation of twenty delicate paper-thin handmade crepes layered with heavenly light pastry cream, all topped with golden, caramelized crust. Madam Kazuko Emi Wada, Tokyo's Grand Dame of Specialty Cakes has been in business for 40 years. With a strong interest in baking, she learned the art of making cakes and pastries from her Australian mother-in-law. While living in Europe, she learned the sophistication of packaging and presentation and honed her skill in ribbon making at French factory that supplied luxury brand Hermes.

In 1970, she started her career as a cake supplier to 7 out of the best 10 cake shops, Paper Moon Cake Boutiques in Tokyo, Haneda airport, Osaka, Kyoto, Ginza and Karizawa Lake Town. In 1990, her clients included the biggest Japanese coffee chains, Tully's, fine French shopping brand Printemps. In 2001, she expanded in New York City supplying cakes to Dean and Deluca, Takashimaya and Neiman Marcus. She sounded and opened the successful Lady M Cake Boutique in Upper East Side. Highly popular creation include Original Mille Crepe which drew the attention of Filipino show business and entertainment mogul, VIVA's Vicente "Boss Vic" del Rosario Jr. (a long time friend and business associate of Madam Emi's husband). Boss Vic convinced a retired since 2013, Madam Emi to partner with the food subsidiary of the VIVA Group of Companies, Viva International Food and Restaurant, Inc. to put ip stores in the Philippines.

We were able to have an intimate meet and greet with Mrs. Emi Wada and her husband last May 8, 2018 at Paper Moon, Shangri-la Plaza. The softspoken Mrs. Wada answered some questions from selected media partners about the company and their visit to Manila.

We also got to enjoy Paper Moon’s coffee and desserts. It was a quick get together since they had a packed schedule that day. But it was certainly an honor to meet the founder and creator of Japan’s famous mille crepes.
